Interview by Comoemprenderen.us
In this article, we’re interviewing Luis Alberto Diaz, founder of LML Translations. He is a Venezuelan entrepreneur who has been living in the United States for several years, helping individuals and companies with translation services.
What were the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business in the U.S.?
Initially, the biggest challenge was maintaining the income needed to cover the cost of living. Clients didn’t come right away. We relied on larger agencies with high-volume projects, then gradually grew as an agency with our own direct clients. We built an online presence and used free and paid marketing channels.
What strategies helped you grow in a competitive market?
Quality of service was the first differentiator. Establishing an online presence was one of the most important strategies. In the early stages, freelance platforms helped us connect with large agencies and steady work.
How did you navigate cultural and linguistic differences?
Since we work in language services, we did not face major linguistic obstacles. Setting up a business in the U.S. can be easier than in some other countries, and it is possible to become operational and legally established in about a week.
What resources were crucial to your development?
Reading, research, building profiles and submitting proposals on specialized freelance platforms, together with social and professional networks such as LinkedIn, helped us enter the language services industry.
What technology and tools are essential?
Translation software solutions provide a major advantage, especially in the corporate space. It is also important to be comfortable with commonly used tools. Email is indispensable.
What advice would you give Latino entrepreneurs starting in the U.S.?
Evaluate the market and assess the need for your product or service. The U.S. market is competitive, but opportunities and customers exist for many businesses. Identify a niche and define strategies to reach it.
What marketing strategies have worked best?
An online presence — including a dedicated website and profiles on major search engines — social media and word of mouth have been effective for attracting and retaining clients.
How do you see the translation market evolving?
Machine translation and artificial intelligence have changed the market, creating challenges and opportunities for growth through emerging technologies.
Luis’s story demonstrates perseverance, strategic vision and the ability to adapt. With technical skills, effective marketing and a commitment to quality, it is possible to build and sustain a business in the translation industry.
